Glucosamine is a natural component of cartilage, ligaments, and tendons whose synthesis decreases with age. When the production of glucosamine is disturbed, cartilage begins to degenerate and osteoarthritis gradually sets in. The mechanism of action of glucosamine is still unknown. Nevertheless, numerous clinical and scientific studies on glucosamine sulfate supplements seem to indicate a beneficial action on:
1) maintaining joint health,
2) slowing down the degradation of cartilage,
3) reducing joint inflammation and associated pain.
In general, the beneficial effects of glucosamine are observed from a few weeks to 2 months after the beginning of the treatment. Chondroitin is very often combined with it for better results.
