Symptoms: COLD HANDS – HEAVY LEGS – WATER RETENTION
HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS:
DIET
Certain types of food are well recognized for their blood thinning action on circulation. Whether it is garlic, omega-3 (that we find in cold water fish like salmon, mackerel or tuna) or even spices like rosemary, turmeric or cayenne pepper, all of these foods support blood circulation. However, we can’t neglect to strengthen blood vessels walls since they are directly involved in blood flow regulation. In order to do this, foods rich in flavonoids help to maintain the integrity of the vessels walls as well as to prevent the destruction of collagen, so important for the structure itself of the vessels walls. We find these precious flavonoids mainly in fruits like blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries and prunes. We find them as well in green tea, dark chocolate, red wine, etc.
PHYSICAL EXERCISE
The body has to be in motion to activate blood circulation. People who have a sedentary work (for example, sitting many hours in front of a computer) will benefit from stretching regularly to stimulate blood circulation in their legs. Taking a walk during break at work can be as well a good way to activate blood circulation. As for people who work long hours standing on their feet, they will benefit from taking breaks by sitting or by elevating their legs to facilitate blood circulation returning to the hearth. In all situations, practicing exercises that involve muscular contractions in the legs will be of benefit. In fact, when muscles are contracting, they promote blood return towards the hearth. Furthermore, since muscles need an important blood supply to get enough oxygen and nutrients, this stimulates blood circulation to its maximum. That is to say that, walking, running, biking or swimming are among the most interesting exercises to help prevent circulatory problems.
BASIC ADVICE
Keep a healthy body weight to facilitate arterial blood circulation and venous blood return. Perform regular exercises to maintain a healthy heart. To prevent blood clot formation, avoid red meats and other foods rich in saturated fats and cholesterol.
Warning: If your physician has prescribed blood thinning medications, you must consult him or your pharmacist before taking a natural health product or over-the-counter medications.
