Symptoms: FEELING OF HEAVINESS IN THE LEGS – VARICOSE VEINS – TINGLING AND SWELLING

HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS:

DIET

Some foods are well known for their fluidity effect on blood. Whether we speak of garlic, omega-3 fatty acids (found in coldwater fish such as salmon, mackerel or tuna), or spices such as rosemary, turmeric and cayenne, all these foods can increase blood fluidity and help with the venous return of blood. However, the vessel walls should not be neglected since they are involved in the regulation of blood flow. Foods rich in flavonoids can help maintain the integrity of blood vessel walls and prevent the destruction of collagen, an important component for the structure of veins. These precious flavonoids are found mainly in colourful fruits and vegetables such as blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, prunes, as well as green tea, dark chocolate and red wine.

PHYSICAL EXERCISE

Get moving to activate blood circulation. People with a sedentary job (for example those sitting for long hours in front of a computer) will benefit from stretching exercises in order to stimulate blood flow in the legs. Taking walks during the break can also be an effective means for improving blood flow. People who stand up while working should rather sit down during their breaks, and even to sit while elevating the legs to facilitate blood return to the heart. In any case, exercises involving leg muscle contractions will be beneficial. Indeed, upon contraction, the muscles favour the upward movement of blood in the veins. Moreover, since active muscles require an increase in blood flow to provide oxygen, the blood turnover will be optimized. Hence, walking, running, cycling and swimming are among the most interesting exercises to prevent circulatory problems.

BASIC ADVICE

Keeping a healthy body weight facilitates arterial blood flow and venous return. Wear compression stockings to help with venous return.

Warning: If your physician has prescribed blood thinning medications, you must consult him or your pharmacist before taking a natural health product or over-the-counter medications.
