Melatonin is a hormone that is naturally produced by the body, primarily by the pineal gland, and helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle. When using a melatonin supplement, it is best to start with the lowest effective dose, as taking more does not necessarily lead to better results. In fact, excessive amounts may sometimes have the opposite effect, potentially disrupting sleep patterns, causing grogginess upon waking, or reducing its effectiveness. For this reason, it is recommended to begin with a low dose and increase gradually only if needed.

Key ingredient

Melatonin, more commonly known as the sleep hormone, is naturally produced by the body. It is synthesized from serotonin and secreted by the pineal gland starting at nightfall.

Its concentration peaks around 2 a.m., reaching levels 10 to 100 times higher than those measured during the day. Once this peak has passed, melatonin secretion decreases to make way for the waking phase.

Melatonin helps:

  • synchronize the circadian rhythm (24 hours)
  • speed up falling asleep
  • improve the duration and quality of sleep

Some foods naturally contain melatonin, such as pistachios, black rice, and cow's milk, but the amount can vary significantly depending on factors such as sun exposure, harvest time, or milking time for animals.

In Canada, the melatonin used in natural health products can be of plant or synthetic origin. The melatonin in our bilayer tablets is synthetic.
